#1 - AI Rush Vs The World

Will the rush to AI technology destroy our hopes of tackling the climate crisis?

Although the uptake of AI will require almost as much energy as Japan by 2030, with only half of it being from renewable sources, a recent report argues that the effect on the climate has been “overstated”

Apparently, this is because harnessing AI to make energy use and other activities more efficient could result in savings that reduce greenhouse gas emissions overall.

For example, fining efficiencies within energy systems, industrial processes, and designing electricity grids to take more renewable energy.

Does this seem like a bit of a round the houses way to justify using AI anyway even though it is proven to have a shocking effect on energy use?

Yeah, To Us Too…

#2 - Minority Report In Real Life

Yes, that’s right, and in the UK no less.

The UK government is developing a “murder prediction” programme which it hopes can use personal data of those known to the authorities to identify the people most likely to become killers.

Apparently they’re doing this by using algorithms to analyse the information of thousands of people “known to the police”. So, people who’ve been victims of crime as well as perpetrators.

Originally called the “homicide prediction project” it’s been renamed to something a lot less sexy and less alarm-bell-ringing, now called “sharing data to improve risk assessment”. Clever.

Although planned to “boost public safety” campaigners have called it “chilling and dystopian” and argued that research has always showed that algorithmic systems for predicting crime are inherently flawed.

We mean, hey, even Minority Report showed us that!

#3 - All Female Space Mission

Feminist, or just wastefully capitalist?

Well, I think many many people across the internet are in agreement that it is the latter.

Sending  a group of fully glammed up women into space in tight blue suits to advertise Jeff Bezos’s space tourism company and promote Katy Perry’s upcoming tour isn’t necessarily the feminism that the world needs right now but hey…

At least the memes were good, and at least one of the women who went up was a rocket scientist. Good for her!

#4 Mommy Bloggers vs The State

Family and child influencers are a huge industry globally, and many channels rely on their children for the views.

For example, Ryans’s World is a YouTube channel featuring Ryan himself unboxing toys, which he’s been doing since the age of 3 and raking in as much as 35 million dollars a year doing it.

Now, some states in the US are cracking down on the industry with laws to protect the children in the videos and to ensure they’re getting some of the money earned.

California, Utah, Minnesota and Illinois have passed laws mandating that kids receive compensation in the form of a trust if they feature in over a third of monetised content or when the poster hits a certain income threshold. Other laws give the children in the videos the right to ask for the content to be deleted when they hit adulthood.

The key takeaway here is that family content is being viewed as work for the children taking part, rather than simply being viewed as family time caught on video.

#5 - Should You Pick Your Career Based On Being Introverted or Extroverted?

Career experts say you should take it into account, but not let it hold you back.

For example, you should advocate for what you need if you know how you work best. For example, as an introvert, if you feel like you need alone time to work efficiently, you can ask for protected focus time.

As an extrovert, you may thrive in collaborative projects, and push for more work alongside others.

What you shouldn’t do is hold yourself back based on personality labels. For example, as an introvert saying you wouldn’t do well in sales, or as an extrovert ruling out solo work in an office context.

A career coach has said that in her experience she’s coached many introverts who thrive in leadership roles, and many extroverts who’ve been very successful working in solo roles.

Your personality does mean you may work easier in one way or another, but it doesn’t dictate what you can and can’t do.

Just Do It
